Hypercholesterolemia

Hypercholesterolemia is characterized by elevated levels of cholesterol in blood. One fraction of cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol or "bad" cholesterol) tends to deposit on blood vessel lining (atheromatous plaque) increasing the risk of a heart infarct or stroke. Another fraction called HDL- cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) offers limited protection against plaque formation.
