Triage nursing : An innovative approach to workplace accidents

Implemented in Quebec during the pandemic to offer virtual appointments with specialized nurses in the event of a workplace accident, nursing triage has proven its worth. It’s particularly appreciated by employers and employees for the remarkable degree to which it speeds up the processing of files. Here’s a closer look at an innovative front-line service.

Triage makes the process easier

The service has existed in the United States for several years but was introduced in Quebec during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Biron’s Occupational Health divisions followed this trend. The quality of the results obtained and the positive feedback from workplaces prompted the company to extend the initiative.

Triage allows for the immediate care of an employee and personalized support that brings peace of mind. Of course, the service won’t take away the pain, but it does relieve the tension of waiting times and administrative procedures. In addition, Biron's nursing triage service now offers interpreter assistance through its partnership with Voyce. This translation service, which is available in over 240 languages and dialects, helps overcome language barriers.

Nursing triage simplifies the administrative aspect and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of each party. From the first day, the service takes charge of the file. If necessary, it refers the patient to specialists and can even make appointments.

Simple, fast and efficient

Speed up the process

In concrete terms, the service works very simply. When an incident is reported by an employee, the employer makes an appointment directly on the Biron portal. The same day, the employee meets virtually with a member of the nursing staff who will listen to the employee, provide advice and produce the medical report.

If there are no complications or serious problems, the professional advises the patient and completes the file, after which the person can return to work normally. A follow-up is then done after 24 hours.

If a consultation is necessary, the employee has two options:

  1. Wait to see a doctor of his or her choice or go to the hospital.
  2. Arrange a quick meeting with a Biron specialist (often the same day). The employer must then pay the related fees.

The second option allows the employee to get an X-ray, a prescription or any medical procedure within a very short time frame. For example, at Biron, it generally takes less than two weeks to make an appointment for an injection, whereas it can take several weeks or even months elsewhere. In addition, the doctors who practice at Biron are trained in occupational medicine.

A rapid response, administrative support and an effective temporary assignment can allow the employee to return to work more quickly and avoid an increase in your CNESST contributions.

In most cases, remaining on the job is preferred, sometimes with a suggestion to modify or lighten the person’s tasks. Staying at home for a simple sprain or minor injury is never good for morale. It creates isolation and a feeling of uselessness.
