Your Questions — 4 minutes

How do I travel with my continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine?

Your sleep apnea should not hinder your movements or deprive you of a restful night’s sleep. By taking a few simple precautions and getting the right equipment for your needs, you can go where you want without compromising the quality of your sleep.

Before leaving

  • Make sure that no parts of your equipment need to be replaced.
  • Empty and dry the humidifier chamber thoroughly.
  • If you are going away for a long time, an additional tube, mask cushion and filter may be required.
  • Even if you do not plan to use your CPAP machine during the flight, we recommend that you bring it in your carry-on baggage to reduce the risk of damage.

At airport security

  • Since your machine is considered a medical device, you are allowed to take it through airport security.
  • However, it may be inspected. We recommend that you keep a copy of the medical prescription and the invoice with you. They may be requested from you, or useful in the event of a breakdown during your stay or if you have forgotten a part.
  • The security officer may ask you to operate the machine.
  • X-rays do not interfere with the operation of your machine.

Using your machine during the flight

  • Some airlines allow the use of CPAP machines during the flight, while others do not. It is better to find out before you leave. However, you will not be able to use the humidifier on board the plane.
  • Most machines automatically adjust to altitude, while others must be adjusted manually.

Power source

  • Most CPAP machines can operate on a current of 100 to 240 V and 50 to 60 Hz, allowing them to be used in different countries.
  • If no power source is available, you can use a deep cycle battery (also called a “marine battery”) or an electrical generator (400 watts or more) to power your CPAP machine, but you should avoid using the humidifier. If you want to travel lighter, there are also lithium batteries suitable for CPAP machines.
  • We recommend that you pack a good quality power strip with circuit breaker and a plug adapter, depending on your destination.

At the hospital

  • We recommend that you bring your machine and mask with you, as hospitals do not always have a machine available or a mask like the one you are using.

Maintenance

  • Wipes will make it easier to clean your mask during the trip.

Investing in a travel-friendly machine

  • What makes a travel CPAP machine different from a standard CPAP machine is its size. The travel machine is smaller and therefore easier to carry.
  • If you travel often, investing in a travel-friendly machine could be a wise choice.
