4. What is a Contraindication versus a Warning?
  • Contraindications: conditions under which the mask is not to be used.
  • Warnings: identify a possible hazard and provide information on how to safely use the mask.
5. What is the relative strength of each clip (in millitesla)?
  • Resmed: The magnetic force of the clip is between 250 mT (millitesla) and 270 mT, which is within the allowable safety limit of 400 mT.
  • Philips: Magnets with a magnetic field strength up to 400 mT (millitesla) are used in the Philips mask.

The strength of the magnet should not deteriorate over time under normal use.

6. Why do I need to keep the magnetic clips more than 6 inches (15 cm) from my active medical devices?

There are different types of active medical devices. Magnets may interact differently with each type of device. In general, if a magnet is brought too close to the device, the device will temporarily go into "default mode". However, the device should return to normal operation once the magnetic field is far enough away from the device.

7. Will manufacturers continue to distribute masks with magnetic clips?

Yes, after implementation of the updated instructions and labeling, manufacturers continue to distribute masks with magnetic clips.

8. What is the potential risk of serious injury that Resmed is warning about?

From 2014 to November 2023, Resmed has sold tens of millions of masks with magnets globally. In this time, Resmed has submitted five (5) reports of serious harm (medical intervention/ hospitalization) that were potentially related to magnetic interference with an implanted device (including ICD and CSF shunt implants) to relevant Regulatory Authorities. No permanent injuries or deaths have been reported.

Contraindicated patients can avoid the potential of harm from magnetic interference by using alternative masks without magnets. All other patients using Resmed masks with magnets can continue to use the mask following the updated Instructions for Use.
