Women in Science: Inspiring future generations

February 11th, 2025

Established in 2015 by UNESCO and UN Women, International Day of Women and Girls in Science contributes to the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. One of the major goals is to promote diversity in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By welcoming more voices and different talents, we can create positive change, open up new perspectives and expand these sectors, which are crucial to the future of our society.

Why focus on women?

Around the world, the picture is not as rosy. Sadly, there is still inequality between men and women in many fields, and the sciences are no exception. Even though girls often perform just as well at school, they are too often hindered in their choice of direction and career. They do not get as much support for going into STEM and have fewer role models they can identify with. Nowadays, women represent only 30% of professionals in these areas and 26% of students in STEM university programs. Let’s reverse this trend, in the interest of all the young women dreaming of a career in the sciences.

To address these inequalities, many inspiring initiatives have been developed, for supporting and encouraging women in their scientific journey:

  • Les Scientifines: This program encourages young girls from disadvantaged areas to discover a passion for STEM, as early as elementary school. The idea is to provide them with opportunities and support as they progress.
  • Les Ingénieuses: Through this network, young women can get together and talk with female engineers from all backgrounds, creating precious connections to inspire them and help them grow in their choice of career.
  • The Quebec Chair for Women in Science and Engineering: This initiative aims to support the recruitment, retention and advancement of women in scientific and technological sectors, so they feel welcome and valued at every step of their journey.

At Biron, we are proud to be a business that actively supports women in the scientific field. Our staff consists of 80% women, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where every talent can realize their full potential.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science at Biron

At Biron, we firmly believe that diversity is an asset, and that every woman deserves to be supported and encouraged in her journey. On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we would like to focus on those women who, day in and day out, play a role in advancing science, with passion and determination. These women have a substantial influence, and we are proud to have them.
