A simple test to assess liver health: The ELF test is now available at Biron

Metabolic-related liver diseases, such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic (fatty) liver disease (MASLD), are on the rise in Canada. Often silent, they usually progress without any noticeable symptoms. Formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), MASLD can evolve silently for several years, with a gradual progression to fibrosis, before the onset of serious complications such as cirrhosis.
In this context, early detection is essential, especially for those at risk, Biron now offers the ELF (Enhanced Liver Fibrosis) test. This involves a simple blood test to assess the risk of developing advanced liver fibrosis. The ELF test is an accessible, rapid, and clinically validated solution. Additionally, we are the first laboratory in Canada to offer this test, with sample collection available at all our service points across Quebec and an analysis conducted at our Brossard laboratory.
A non-invasive, clinically validated method
The ELF test measures three biomarkers involved in liver remodelling and uses a clinically validated algorithm to produce a risk score. When combined with the FIB-4 test, this algorithm provides significant improvement in the detection of fibrosis and reduces unnecessary referrals for specialized, more invasive care.
Thanks to earlier detection, healthcare professionals can intervene more quickly, thereby preventing progression to serious complications. European and American guidelines governing the use of the ELF test also provide clear support for its integration into clinical practice.
*The ELF test is specifically intended for people with one or more of the following risk factors:
*Fatty liver detected by imaging;
*BMI higher than 30;
*Type 2 diabetes;
*Abnormal liver function test.
The ELF test helps identify at-risk individuals and speeds up clinical decision-making. The results are available quickly without long waiting times.
For patients, it is a reassuring, painless test. It provides a better understanding of the condition of their liver and enables them to play an active role in managing their liver health.
Now available at Biron
Including ELF testing in the care pathway enhances the assessment of patients at risk of liver disease. Easy to integrate into existing practices, it is a valuable tool for proactive management.
