What is a maintenance of wakefulness test?
The multiple sleep latency test is the test of choice for evaluating hypersomnolence during the day. It can also be useful in diagnosing narcolepsy. The test is performed during the day at one of our clinics. When you arrive for your appointment, a healthcare professional trained in sleep care will set up the equipment and remain with you throughout the test. You will be asked to take 4 or 5 naps at predetermined times and specific intervals.
The set-up of equipment involves sensors being applied to your head and face, allowing the healthcare professional to analyze how you fall and remain asleep during your naps. The sensors will record your brain’s electrical activity in order to identify the different sleep stages.
The test can detect sleep disorders such as:
- narcolepsy (sleepiness and sleep attacks during the day)
- hypersomnolence during the day
The data recorded during your multiple sleep latency test will be interpreted by a doctor trained in sleep care and forwarded to your attending physician.
Preparing for the test (adults)
IMPORTANT: You must fill out the following two documents before the test. You can fill them out online or on paper. It is important to print them and bring them with you to the clinic.
Sleep journal: Fill out 1 week before the test
List of medications: Fill out the morning of the test
In order to properly prepare for the test:
- Have your prescription and the two above-mentioned documents with you.
- If you have severe nasal congestion or if you are not feeling well, you should postpone the appointment.
- Wear comfortable clothes. Bring slippers, a pillow and everything you need to sleep well. Bring something to read or do between naps. Electronic equipment such as tablets and telephones are not allowed during the test.
- Bring a light lunch and a few snacks to eat between naps. You will not be able to go out for lunch.
- Please do not consume alcohol or caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate) for six hours before the test. Your nicotine consumption will be limited.
- Take your usual medications unless otherwise specified by the doctor.
- It is important not to use face cream or body lotion.
- If you wear a hairpiece, you must remove it so that the sensors can be properly applied.
- If you currently use a continuous positive air pressure device (CPAP), bring your mask.
- The test will end around 4:00 p.m. or when the healthcare professional on site determines.
