FAQ and troubleshooting - devices and accessories

What are the features of the following systems?

CPAP device:
  • A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device is used to keep the upper airways open. The delivered pressure, measured in cmH2O, remains fixed according to the parameters set.
Auto-adjusting CPAP (or autoCPAP) device:
  • A variable positive airway pressure device is used to keep the upper airways open. The delivered pressure, measured in cmH2O, varies according to the parameters set. Determined by the device’s algorithm, the air pressure adjusts to the patient’s respiratory needs.
BiPAP device:
  • A bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) device is used to keep the upper airways open. The delivered pressure, measured in cmH2O, can be fixed or variable. This ventilatory device is indicated when the presence of respiratory events cannot be corrected by a CPAP device (fixed or variable).
  • Manual titration should be performed in a sleep laboratory to determine the required pressure levels.
Volumetric fan (adaptive servo-ventilation, or ASV):
  • This positive airway pressure device operates using specialized algorithms. It is indicated when a CPAP device (fixed, variable or bi-level) cannot optimally correct the presence of complex respiratory events.
  • Manual titration should be performed in a sleep laboratory to determine the required pressure levels.

Who needs a face mask?

The face mask is indicated for clients with chronic nasal congestion or if a health condition justifies its use. This is not the first recommandation of mask.

What is the tube holder for?

The tube holder supports the weight of the hose and positions it to ensure the mask does not move while you sleep.

Who pays for CPAP treatments in Quebec?

Private health insurance plans generally cover 80% to 100% of the cost of treatment, which is not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). However, those receiving social assistance in Quebec are covered for CPAP therapy. There are also other associations that cover the costs of the treatment. Our agents can help you with the documents you need to claim your reimbursement.

Are CPAP devices noisy?

The latest models are almost completely silent. However, we suggest that you perform the maintenance of the filters as recommended by the supplier, which will keep your device silent for longer.

If you have an older device, you could contact your insurance company to find out if you are eligible to purchase a newer model. Insurance companies generally cover the purchase of one mask per year and the purchase of a CPAP device every five years.
