Mammography in tomosynthesis at Imagix
The team at Imagix is proud to offer a new technology to patients who come for a screening mammogram: tomosynthesis.
This technology involves taking several images from different angles using an X-ray tube that moves in an arc over each compressed breast. The X-rays are then synthesized by computer to create three-dimensional images of the breasts, similar to a computed tomography (CT) scan. These more accurate images reduce the need for further testing and improve breast cancer detection by 30%-40%, especially for small tumours that may be missed during 2-D mammography due to overlapping tissue. As with a standard mammogram, tomosynthesis is performed with breast compression, except that the X-ray tube does the scan instead of remaining stationary.
- More precise analysis of the size, shape and location of abnormalities
- Fewer additional examinations required
- Faster analysis of the malignant or benign nature of a lesion
- Better diagnoses and detection rates, especially for dense breasts
- The exam is performed on the same device as a standard mammogram and takes only a few seconds longer.
In accordance with the new standard of practice at Imagix, our team will now perform a tomosynthesis in addition to your mammogram in order to offer you the most complete examination possible. As with mammography, the cost of this additional examination is covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
We provide services that can help your doctor diagnose breast cancer and determine the appropriate treatment.
