Pelvic MRI

A pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is the test of choice for studying the various organs of the pelvic region and identifying possible abnormalities. It captures clear and precise images that allow a radiologist to detect conditions such as cystic or tumoural lesions.

This test very often requires an injection of gadolinium, which is administered from a catheter previously installed in a vein by the technologist.

Examination procedure

For this scan, we will ask you to do the following:

  • Lie comfortably on a mobile examination table in a bright, airy room.
  • Wear, if you wish, headphones with music or ear plugs. The MRI machine produces percussive noises that some people may find a nuisance.
  • Remain still for 30 to 60 minutes until the exam is completed.

The duration of the procedure and noise generated by the machine may make some people uncomfortable. At ImagixTM, our technologist can see and hear you at all times and will ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the examination.

To allow you to plan your visit, please keep in mind that the total duration of your visit can vary between 60 and 90 minutes, even if the test itself only lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

Preparing for the Examination

To ensure that your pelvic or prostate MRI exam is a success, fast (no liquids or solid food) for 6 hours before the test.

A medical prescription is required to perform this examination.
Please note that MRI examinations are not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). However, most group insurance plans cover the costs.
