What happens during a teleconsultation?
A member of our nursing staff will meet with you via teleconsultation and ask a few questions about your signs and symptoms. During the teleconsultation, a physical exam and/or lab tests may be required in order to provide a prescription for appropriate treatment.
If needed, the physical exam will be done during a second appointment at one of our service points, ensuring your comfort and respecting your privacy.
During the same appointment, we can also quickly collect samples for lab testing if necessary. Lab tests can be performed by Biron or by the service provider of your choice.
The following laboratory tests may be recommended:
- Urine analysis and culture
- Vaginal secretion culture
- Trichomoniasis screening
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea screening (depending on your risk factors)
How much does it cost to get a medical consultation for symptoms of a urinary tract or vaginal infection?
The teleconsultation fee is $95. This includes a 40-minute consultation with our nursing staff. The cost of the laboratory tests starts at $75 and will vary depending on the number and type of tests prescribed.
Costs for consultation and laboratory tests may be reimbursed in whole or in part by most private insurance plans. Please check with your insurer beforehand.

Can I get a teleconsultation for cystitis?
Yes, cystitis is a urinary tract infection that occurs when bacteria enter the bladder. The most common symptoms are pain, or a burning sensation when urinating, the need to urinate frequently, or the presence of blood in the urine. If you have one or more of these symptoms, fill out the assessment form to access the consultation service.
When should I consult to get tested if I think I have a urinary tract infection?
We recommend that you book a teleconsultation as soon as you have one or more of the symptoms in the chart above. Most women will need to consult to undergo tests. Even though many women believe their signs and symptoms indicate a urinary tract infection, only a urine analysis and culture can confirm or contradict the diagnosis, thereby avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use for a negative result.

What should I do if my urinary tract infection symptoms are severe?
If your symptoms are accompanied by significant pain in the ribs, a fever with a temperature above 38.5°C, and chills, a general decline in your condition, nausea, and vomiting, please consult your family doctor. If you do not have a family doctor, you have several options:

Do I need to consult every time I have a urinary infection?
If you experience urinary tract infections regularly, there is no need to consult every episode if you have a prevention plan established with a healthcare professional. However, in cases where prevention or treatment fails, it will be necessary to have additional tests to confirm whether it is indeed an infection, whether it is the usual bacteria, or whether the bacteria present are resistant to the prescribed treatment.
Should I always consult if I have vaginal discharge?
No, vaginal discharge is normal. However, if there is a change in colour or consistency of the discharge, the discharge is considered unusual and a medical consultation may be needed to determine the appropriate tests.
What happens if I test positive for a urinary tract or vaginal infection?
The nursing staff will contact you by telephone to inform you and to proceed with the case management. A prescription for the appropriate medication will be issued.
