How is pelvic inflammatory disease transmitted?
Pelvic inflammatory syndrome affects the uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries and surrounding tissues. It is caused by a variety of bacteria or viruses, including STBBIs.
What are the symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease?
Although many people have no symptoms, it is possible to experience:
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- More abundant or abnormal vaginal discharge
- More abundant menstruation
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
- Chills or fever
How to get tested?
- Blood tests (to confirm the presence and type of STBBIs)
- Ultrasound (to have an image of the genital organs)
- Laparoscopy (to identify the precise site of infection)
