Colorectal cancer screening (FIT test) at Biron Medical Laboratory

This service is intended primarily for people aged 50 to 74 or with a family history of colorectal cancer. Anyone who does not meet the eligibility criteria may be refused screening and redirected to a medical consultation.

Colorectal cancer screening is recommended every two years from the age of 50. If the last screening is too recent, the test request may be refused. Alternatively, you can consult a doctor.

The colorectal cancer screening service cannot be offered to people who present one or more of the following symptoms: recent or persistent change in bowel habits, presence of blood in the stool, bleeding after a bowel movement, or unexplained and documented anemia. People who have already been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, polyps or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis) are also excluded, as they are at high risk of colorectal cancer and should be followed up medically rather than taking the FIT test.

If a person develops one or more of the above-mentioned symptoms during the process, they must inform Biron as soon as possible.

FIT screening is not a diagnostic test for colorectal cancer: a colonoscopy will be required in the event of a positive FIT result.

Online validation of program eligibility

Eligibility for the FIT screening program is determined by a person’s answers to a questionnaire. The questions asked are based on standards established by Quebec’s ministry of health and social services (MSSS).

Choice of service provider

Once a person has completed the questionnaire and their eligibility for the program has been confirmed, they can choose to continue the process with a public service provider offering free screening or with Biron Health Group or another private service provider, for a fee.

If the person chooses a service provider other than Biron Health Group, they will be able to obtain the results of their eligibility evaluation for the program, and no fee will be charged.

If the person chooses to use the services of Biron Health Group, they will receive their results 48 hours after dropping off their sample at a service centre. However, Biron Health Group is not responsible for delays in the transmission of results by another service provider.

In the event of a positive FIT result requiring a colonoscopy, a consultation request will be sent to a colonoscopy centre in the person’s region. Biron Health Group is not responsible for wait times.

Health care professionals at Biron Health Group are authorized to conduct teleconsultations solely with individuals in the province of Quebec at the time of the teleconsultation.

Cancellation and refund

A fee of $149 is applicable. In the event of cancellation before the kit is shipped, a full refund is possible. After shipment, no refund will be issued.

Receive your sampling kit at home, then go to a Canada Post office to return your sample.
