Snoring and sleep disorders: What if it’s not background noise?

July 15, 2025

Every night, lots of people share a bed with a snorer. And for many, that means restless nights and multiple awakenings. Some people even go as far as having separate bedrooms. Snoring can be more than an unpleasant sound. It may be a sign of a serious sleep disorder. What if, by helping your bed partner sleep better, you ended up with more peaceful nights, too?

Snoring, an intrusive bedfellow!

It’s unmistakable. Sometimes light, sometimes loud, snoring is the sound that happens when air struggles to move through a partially blocked airway during sleep, causing the soft tissues in the throat to vibrate. It’s not a choice, it’s not a lack of willpower, but it often becomes a source of frustration—and conflict—in a relationship.

Snoring is not always a cause for concern. In some cases, however, it can hide a genuine respiratory sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This is where your vigilance comes in.

When snoring is dangerous

When someone has sleep apnea, they stop breathing for a few seconds many times a night without them even realizing it. The brain triggers episodes of micro-awakening to restart breathing. The outcome: sleep that may appear normal but is not restful.

Oftentimes, the person on the other side of the bed is the first to notice the initial signs and is the first to witness the pauses in breathing. The startled awakenings. The fatigue that builds up over the days, in spite of a supposed good night’s sleep.

This isn’t a trivial condition. Sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, and even depression. Luckily, there are simple and effective ways to assess it… and rediscover quality sleep.

Ready to take the first step towards peaceful nights?

Take the assessment test now.

Sleeping together means keeping an eye on each other

It’s often the bed partner who first takes action. Out of care. Out of love. Or simply to recapture peaceful nights together.

If the person you sleep with snores regularly, seems exhausted when they wake up, has pauses in breathing, or struggles to stay awake during the daytime… you have an important job to do.

At Biron, we’ve developed a sleep disorder assessment test that is simple, free, and available online. In just a few minutes, you can find out if your prartner is at risk and whether a more thorough evaluation is needed. Sometimes, a small step is all you need to initiate a big change.

Snoring is often mistaken for something commonplace

Many people live with a snoring partner every day. How many resort to using earplugs for sleeping? And yet, it’s often a taboo topic. Because of embarrassment. Because of habit. Because of the fear of upsetting someone we care for.

Sleep is a cornerstone of our health and deserves our attention. Above all, there are solutions that can improve everyone’s night.

If sleep apnea is diagnosed, there are multiple solutions to consider, depending on the condition:

  • simple lifestyle changes like losing weight or not drinking alcohol, especially in the evening;
  • adaptation devices such as a mandibular advancement device or CPAP machine;
  • adjustments to the sleeping position;
  • targeted treatment when an anatomical cause has been identified.

Everyone is unique. We’re here to help you find the treatment that best meets your needs and the nature of your condition.
