Simple and/or control spirometry

Pulmonary function tests

Simple and/or control spirometry

Description

  • Allows us to objectively assess an individual’s lung function.
  • Allows us to verify the effectiveness of a treatment in a patient being treated for asthma.

Test procedure

The respiratory therapist will explain the procedure to you and guide you throughout the appointment. You should be seated comfortably in a straight-backed chair with your feet on the floor, a nose clip on your nostrils and a mouthpiece in your mouth.

The therapist will then instruct you to empty your lungs, without forcing, then breathe in as far as you can, and then breathe out again, as fast and for as long as you can.

You may need to repeat these steps a few times until the therapist gets satisfactory results. It takes up to one hour to complete this test.

How do I make an appointment?

The spirometry test interpreted by a pulmonologist requires a medical prescription. When you make an appointment, our agent will give you important instructions to follow in order to satisfy the conditions for a successful test.

Preparing for the Examination

  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid eating for 1 hour before the test.
  • Certain respiratory medications must be stopped in the days and hours before your test. Instructions to follow will be given to you when you make your appointment.
  • In case of a cold, flu, sinusitis or any other unusual health condition, it is recommended to postpone the test. These conditions could affect the performance of the examination and the results.
